Information and Communication Technologies

The overall objective of the Information and Communication Technology part of the Cooperation specific program in FP7 is to improve the competitiveness of the European industry and enable Europe to master and shape future development in ICT so that demands of its society and economy are met.

EU research funding is focused on seven key Research Challenges to ensure Europe becomes a world leader in ICTs.

Four of the Challenges aim at industrial leadership in key ICT sectors:
  • Networking, Computing and Service infrastructure
  • Smart environments, Cognition, Interaction and Control
  • Alternative paths to Components
  • Content, Information management & Media technologies

Four Challenges are driven by socio-economic targets:

  • ICT for Health and Well-being
  • ICT for Low-Carbon economy
  • ICT for the Enterprise and Manufacturing
  • Digital libraries and Learning
Four PPPs (Public-Private-Partnership):
  • Future Internet (FI)
  • Green Cars (GC)
  • Energy Efficient Buildings (EeB)
  • Factories of the Future (FoF)
Within each Challenge, the the FP7 program will fund an array of collaborative research projects, each bringing together public and private organisations across Europe to help the EU pool its scientific, industrial, financial and human resources.
