Theme 4 - Objective

The core objective of the ’Nanosciences, Nanotechnologies, Materials and new Production Technologies (NMP) theme is to improve the competitiveness of European industry and generate knowledge to ensure its transformation from a resource-intensive to a knowledge-intensive industry, by creating step changes through research and implementing decisive knowledge for new applications at the crossroads between different technologies and disciplines. This will benefit both new, high-tech industries and higher-value, knowledge-based traditional industries, with a special focus on the appropriate dissemination of RTD results to SMEs. These activities are concerned with enabling technologies which impact all industrial sectors and many other FP7 Themes.

Theme 4 - Structure

4.1 - Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies
Studying phenomena and manipulation of matter at the nanoscale and developing nanotechnologies leading to the manufacturing of new products and services.
4.2 - Materials
Using the knowledge of nanotechnologies and biotechnologies for new products and processes.
4.3 - New Production
Creating conditions for continuous innovation and for developing generic production 'assets' (technologies, organization and production facilities as well as human resources), while meeting safety and environmental requirements.
4.4 - Integration of Technologies for Industrial Applications
Focusing on new technologies, materials and applications to address the needs identified by the different European Technology Platforms.

Theme 4 - Budget

€ 3.5 billion will be allocated to fund the NMP theme over FP7 duration.

Theme 4 – Calls for proposals

For the NMP Theme, the evaluation of proposals for Collaborative projects (Large scale, Small scale, projects targeted to SME and Networks of Excellence) will be organized in two stage submission.

The first stage proposal, of a maximum of 10 pages should focus on the S&T content and on clear identification of the intended results, their intended use and the expected impact (economic, social, environmental, etc.) and 2 additional pages to describe the consortium and the estimated financial resources involved.

Coordinators of retained proposals in stage 1 ("go" proposals) will be invited to submit a complete proposal, in a specified deadline, which will be then evaluated against the entire set of evaluation criteria.
