European Research Council

The European Research Council (ERC) is an independent body that funds investigator-driven frontier research in the European Union (EU).

The Council supports all disciplines, from the biological and physical sciences to engineering and the humanities.

There are 4 types of grants:

Starting Grant: Principal Investigator who have been awarded his/her first PhD ≥ 2 and ≤ 7 years prior to the publication date of the call for proposals. 

Consolidator Grant: Principal Investigator who have been awarded his/her first PhD > 7 and ≤ 12 years prior to the publication date of the call for proposals of the ERC Consolidator Grant.

Advanced Grant: support excellent Principal Investigators at the career stage at which they are already established research leaders with a recognised track record of research achievements.

Proof of Concept Grant: designed for Principal Investigators of ERC frontier research grants, to fund further work (i.e. activities which were not scheduled to be funded by the original ERC frontier research grant), to verify the innovation potential of ideas arising from ERC funded projects.
